Downstream: In water, the direction along the stream is called downstream.

Upstream: In water, the direction against the stream is called upstream.

Let the speed of a boat in still water be u km/hr and the speed of the stream be v km/hr, then

Speed downstream = (u + v) km/hr
Speed upstream = (u - v) km/hr

Let the speed downstream be a km/hr and the speed upstream be b km/hr, then
Speed in still water

Speed in still water $=\frac{1}{2}(a+b)$ km/hr
        Rate of stream = $\frac{1}{2}(a-b)$ km/hr

To solve  problem  on simplification Please follow "BODMAS" Rule

B =  bracket ex. (a+b) or {ax(a-b)}
O = Order (Powers, Square Roots, etc.)
D =  Division
M = Multiplication
A = Addition
S = Subtraction 

Example of simplification (bodmas)

   12 + 22 ÷ 11 × (18 ÷ 3)² - 10
= 12 + 22 ÷ 11 × 6² - 10 (∵ Brackets first)
= 12 + 22 ÷ 11 × 36 - 10 (∵ exponents)
= 12 + 2 × 36 - 10 = 12 + 72 - 10 (∵ division and multiplication, left to right)
= 84 - 10 = 74 (∵ Addition and Subtraction, left to right)
